A really nice article. I'm lately very interested in Freud's believes about what causes neurosis too and I'd like to say that neurosis may not be connected with the masturbation as an action itself, but with the deprivation of sexual insticts and energy. Masturbation can relief the sexual tention but it cannot be a permanent solution, it's only a substitute of what real sex with the woman you love means. For me sex and being with the woman you love is what completes us, and because of that you need to have it both to be balanced and happy. Having guilts concerning either masturbation or sex in general causes an internal conflict, because what are hormons tells us to do comes in contradition with the established beliefs of our very close environment (family and culture of the society we live in). As for what the church thinks about masturbation, well unfortunately is not the only part of Jesus' teaching that has been misinterpreted. The key word here is "balance". Masturbation is only a substitute, and in real life some times the lack of sexual partner leeds us to masturbation. It's an act of releasing sexual tension for adults and learning our sexuality at puberty. I fail to see how the prohibition of masturbation and the feelings of anger and confussion this causes, brings people closer to God. We are somehow missing the point here when trying to get closer to God we are filling our souls with hatred for other people and in reality for ourselves.
